About Gravensteen Castle, Ghent

Gravensteen Castle, meaning 'Castle of the Counts', is a formidable medieval fortress built in 1180 by Philip of Alsace, Count of Flanders, modelled on the Crusader castles he had seen in the Holy Land. Surrounded by a moat and crowned with crenellated turrets, the castle served as the residence of the Counts of Flanders before later being repurposed as a courthouse, prison and even a cotton mill.

Restored extensively in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the castle today allows visitors to climb its towers, walk along the battlements, and explore exhibits on its varied history, including a somewhat gruesome display of historic instruments of torture and execution from its time as a courthouse and prison. Its rooftop walkway offers excellent views over Ghent's historic centre and canals.
