About Sindh

Sindh is one of Pakistan's oldest living cultural regions, a land of ancient civilizations, Sufi shrines, Mughal-era tombs and wide open coastline. The journey usually begins in Karachi, where Mohatta Palace, Frere Hall and the Quaid's Mausoleum sit alongside Clifton's sea breeze and the food lanes of Burns Road and Boat Basin. An easy drive east leads to Thatta, home to the Makli Necropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the Shah Jahan Mosque and the calm shores of Keenjhar Lake. Hyderabad adds its bangle bazaar, Pacco Qillo, rabri and falooda, while Ranikot Fort near Jamshoro, the "Great Wall of Sindh," stretches across the Kirthar foothills.

Further north, the story reaches deep into history. Moenjodaro, a UNESCO site, preserves the streets and brick houses of a 4,500-year-old Indus Valley city, and Sehwan Sharif draws visitors to the shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, where evening dhamal creates an unforgettable atmosphere. Gorakh Hill Station, reached by a jeep track from Dadu, offers sweeping views and cool air even in summer, while Sukkur brings the Lansdowne Bridge, Sadhu Bela and Kot Diji Fort. In the far southeast, Thar offers a completely different Sindh: desert villages, Mithi and the Jain temples and Karoonjhar hills of Nagarparkar, green after the monsoon.

With sindhi biryani, sai bhaji, hot kachori, fresh seafood and ajrak to take home, Sindh suits families, couples, friends and solo travelers alike. A short 3-day trip easily covers Karachi, Thatta and Hyderabad, with Ranikot as an optional add-on, while Moenjodaro, Sukkur, Gorakh Hill and Thar are better as a separate longer journey, ideally with a domestic flight to Sukkur or Moenjodaro.
