About Maasai Mara National Reserve

The Maasai Mara National Reserve, named after the Maasai people who have lived in the region for centuries and the Mara River that cuts through it, is one of Africa's most celebrated wildlife reserves, its open savannah grasslands supporting extraordinary densities of lions, elephants, cheetahs and other iconic African wildlife year-round. The reserve forms the northern extension of Tanzania's Serengeti ecosystem, together comprising one of the most important wildlife habitats remaining on the continent.

The Mara is most famous for hosting a dramatic chapter of the Great Migration, when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra cross from the Serengeti into the reserve between roughly July and October, including perilous river crossings where crocodiles lie in wait, among the most thrilling wildlife spectacles anywhere in the world. Beyond the migration season, the Mara offers outstanding game viewing throughout the year, along with the chance to visit traditional Maasai villages and learn about the community's enduring culture.
