About Male Friday Mosque

The Male Friday Mosque, known locally as Hukuru Miskiy, is the oldest mosque in the Maldives, built in 1656 from blocks of coral stone intricately carved with Quranic verses and geometric patterns. For centuries it served as the country's central mosque and remains one of the finest examples of traditional Maldivian coral carving craftsmanship anywhere in the islands.

The mosque's interior is lined with elaborately carved wooden panels and lacquer work, while its surrounding graveyard holds the tombstones of early Maldivian sultans and nobility, many also finely carved from coral stone. Though a more modern mosque now serves as Male's main Friday prayer venue, Hukuru Miskiy remains an active place of worship and one of the country's most treasured historic buildings.
