Fish River Canyon, stretching roughly 160 kilometres in length and reaching depths of up to 550 metres, is one of the largest canyons in the world and the second most visited natural attraction in Namibia after the Sossusvlei dunes. Carved over millions of years by the Fish River cutting through ancient rock, the canyon's dramatic scale and rugged, layered rock formations have earned it frequent comparisons to the United States' Grand Canyon.
Most visitors experience the canyon from its rim, with the main viewpoint near Hobas offering sweeping views into the gorge, particularly striking at sunrise and sunset. For more adventurous travellers, a demanding multi-day, roughly 85-kilometre hiking trail along the canyon floor is available during the cooler months, requiring a permit, good fitness and self-sufficiency, as no facilities exist along the route.
Fish River Canyon suits families, couples and groups for a rim visit of 1 to 2 days, while the full hiking trail suits experienced, well-prepared hikers for a trip of 4 to 5 days. The hiking trail is typically only open during the cooler months and requires a medical certificate and permit arranged in advance.
Even for those not hiking the full trail, the main viewpoint near Hobas offers an impressive and easily accessible way to appreciate the canyon's scale.
Fly from Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi to Windhoek, usually with connections through a Gulf and southern African hub. Check current routes and book early.
Take a self-drive or organised tour, about 7 to 8 hours, to the canyon area.
Visit the main rim viewpoint, or begin the multi-day hike if permitted.
Take in the canyon's scale from the rim, or hike the full trail if prepared.
May to September
Cooler temperatures, the only season the hiking trail is typically open.
April and October
Warm but generally manageable for rim viewing.
November to March
Very hot, with the hiking trail closed for safety reasons.
