About Church of the Savior on Blood

The Church of the Savior on Blood, built between 1883 and 1907, stands on the exact spot where Tsar Alexander II was fatally wounded in an assassination attempt in 1881, commissioned by his son as a memorial to his father's death. Styled deliberately after the more traditionally Russian architecture of St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, rather than the Western-influenced styles common in St. Petersburg at the time, the church stands out dramatically from the city's otherwise largely neoclassical architecture.

The church's interior is covered almost entirely in intricate mosaics, based on designs by some of Russia's leading artists of the era, depicting biblical scenes across an estimated 7,000 square metres, among the largest mosaic collections in Europe. Having survived both revolution and the Siege of Leningrad during the Second World War, the church reopened to the public in 1997 following decades of painstaking restoration.
