About Heart of Sharjah

The Heart of Sharjah is a large-scale heritage restoration project bringing the emirate's old city back to life, preserving and rebuilding traditional coral-stone and gypsum buildings in the historic Al Shuwaiheen district. Narrow lanes wind between restored courtyard houses, wind towers and old souqs, recreating the look and feel of Sharjah as it was before the modern city grew up around it.

Several of the restored buildings now house museums and cultural centres, including Bait Al Naboodah, a beautifully preserved 19th-century merchant's house, alongside traditional souqs selling spices, perfumes and handicrafts. The project, intended to eventually become one of the largest heritage districts in the region, gives visitors a genuine sense of life in the Gulf before the discovery of oil transformed the area.
