The Chapel Bridge, built in 1333, is one of the oldest surviving covered wooden bridges in Europe, spanning the Reuss River at the heart of Lucerne's old town and serving for centuries as part of the city's historic fortifications. The bridge's interior is lined with a series of 17th-century painted panels depicting scenes from Swiss and local history, originally numbering around 150, though many were lost in a 1993 fire that severely damaged the structure.
Rebuilt soon after the fire using as much of the original material as could be salvaged, the bridge remains one of Lucerne's most photographed landmarks, closely associated with the adjacent octagonal Water Tower, a former prison and treasury dating to around the same period. The bridge's gently sloping roofline and flower-lined railings make it a particularly scenic spot, especially when viewed from along the riverbank.
The Chapel Bridge suits families, couples, groups and photographers, for a quick stop of 30 minutes to 1 hour, often combined with a wider walk through Lucerne's old town. The bridge is free to walk across at any time.
Viewing the bridge from along the riverbank, rather than only walking across it, offers some of the best photo opportunities, especially in the early morning or evening light.
