The Pamir Highway, officially the M41, is one of the world's highest and most dramatic international roads, winding through the Pamir Mountains of eastern Tajikistan between Dushanbe and the Kyrgyz city of Osh. Built originally by the Soviet military in the 1930s, the road climbs through high-altitude passes, past glaciers, turquoise lakes and remote Pamiri villages that have changed little in generations.
A journey along the highway is less a single attraction than an unforgettable multi-day overland adventure, usually undertaken by 4x4 with stops in towns such as Khorog, the Wakhan Valley, and at landmarks including Karakul Lake near the Kyrgyz border. The combination of raw, high-altitude scenery, cultural encounters with Pamiri communities and a genuine sense of remoteness makes the Pamir Highway one of the great overland journeys anywhere in the world.
The highway suits experienced travellers, couples and groups comfortable with multi-day overland travel, usually taking 7 to 10 days for the full route with stops. A reliable 4x4 vehicle and driver, or an organised tour, is essential given the road conditions and altitude.
Altitude sickness is a real consideration at the highway's highest passes, so travelling at a steady pace with acclimatisation breaks, rather than rushing the route, is strongly recommended.
Fly from Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi to Dushanbe, usually with one connection through a Gulf or Central Asian hub. Check current routes and book early.
Book a 4x4 with driver or join an organised overland tour in Dushanbe.
Travel east through the Pamirs, stopping in Khorog, the Wakhan Valley and other key points.
Continue on to Osh in Kyrgyzstan, or return to Dushanbe depending on your itinerary.
