Wat Rong Khun, better known as the White Temple, is a privately owned, still-evolving contemporary art temple designed and funded by Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, first opened to visitors in 1997. Unlike Thailand's historic temples, the White Temple is an entirely modern creation, its gleaming white stucco and inlaid mirrored glass intended to represent the purity of the Buddha.
The approach to the main hall crosses a bridge over a sea of outstretched hands representing desire and suffering, a striking and sometimes unsettling introduction to the temple's deeper symbolic themes. Inside and around the grounds, surreal murals and sculptures blend traditional Buddhist imagery with contemporary and pop-culture references, making the White Temple one of the most visually unique religious sites anywhere in Thailand.
The temple suits families, couples, groups and photographers, for a visit of 1 to 2 hours. As a privately funded project still under development, an entrance fee applies, and photography inside the main hall is often restricted, so check current rules on arrival.
The temple's striking white design photographs best on a clear day under bright sunlight, when the reflective mirrored details catch the light most dramatically.
Fly from Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi to Bangkok, then connect to a domestic flight to Chiang Rai. Check current routes and book early.
Take a taxi from Chiang Rai airport into town, usually about 15 to 20 minutes.
Take a taxi, tour or songthaew about 13 km, roughly 20 to 30 minutes, to the temple.
Walk the grounds, cross the symbolic bridge and view the main hall's murals from outside.
