About Tower of London

The Tower of London, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was founded by William the Conqueror in 1066 as a show of Norman power following the conquest of England, with its central White Tower remaining one of the best-preserved Norman keeps in the country. Over nearly a thousand years, the Tower has served variously as a royal palace, a fortress, an armoury, a treasury and, most famously, a prison, having held notable figures including two of Henry VIII's wives before their executions.

Today, the Tower is best known as the home of the Crown Jewels, a dazzling collection of ceremonial regalia including crowns, sceptres and orbs still used in royal ceremonies, displayed within the heavily guarded Jewel House. Visitors can also explore the medieval Royal Palace, see the Tower's famous ravens, and join a free guided tour led by one of the Yeoman Warders, known as Beefeaters, who share the fortress's dramatic history and legends.
