Prambanan is a complex of tall, slender Hindu temples near Yogyakarta, built in the 9th century and dedicated to the three great Hindu gods — Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. The central Shiva temple rises high above the rest, and the sharp stone towers look dramatic against a blue sky.
The main compound holds eight main shrines, with the largest dedicated to Shiva and two others to Vishnu and Brahma, surrounded by smaller temples, many partly ruined after earthquakes over the centuries and carefully restored since. Carved panels along the walls of the Shiva temple tell scenes from the Ramayana, and an open-air stage nearby stages the Ramayana ballet on selected evenings in the dry season, adding a cultural layer to the ruins.
The temple suits families, couples, groups, history lovers and photographers, for a visit of 2 to 3 hours. Seats for the Ramayana ballet can fill up, so booking ahead is worthwhile if you'd like to see the performance.
Combining Prambanan with Borobudur on separate days avoids rushing either site, and halal food is widely available in Java, including around Yogyakarta.
