Souq Al-Mubarakiya is Kuwait City's oldest and most traditional market, with roots going back more than two centuries to the days when it served as the country's main trading hub. The narrow lanes and covered arcades still carry that old-world atmosphere, even as the souq has grown to include modern cafes and restaurants alongside its traditional stalls.
Inside, separate sections sell spices, dates, perfumes, textiles, gold and traditional Kuwaiti clothing, while the food area is one of the best places in the city to try local dishes such as machboos and grilled meats. The souq is equally popular with tourists and locals, making it one of the most authentic places to experience daily life and commerce in Kuwait.
The souq suits families, couples, groups and food lovers, for a visit of 1.5 to 3 hours. It is busiest and most atmospheric in the late afternoon and evening, once the daytime heat has eased.
Bargaining is common in the gold and textile sections, though food stalls and modern cafes usually have fixed prices — it's worth bringing some cash for smaller vendors who may not accept cards.
