About Song-Kul Lake

Song-Kul is a high alpine lake set at over 3,000 m in central Kyrgyzstan, surrounded by wide, treeless grassland rather than the forested slopes typical of other mountain lakes in the country. Each summer, nomadic families bring their herds and yurts up to these high pastures, known as jailoo, continuing a tradition that has shaped life in this region for centuries.

With no permanent settlements and no mobile network around the lake itself, Song-Kul offers one of the most authentic nomadic experiences available in Kyrgyzstan. Visitors typically stay in a yurt camp run by a local family, trying fresh dairy products, horseback riding across the pastures, and watching the lake's water change colour through the long summer evenings.

Local story

Good to Know

The lake suits couples, groups, adventure lovers and anyone interested in nomadic culture, for a stay of 1 to 3 days. Yurt camps provide bedding, meals and often horses for hire, so very little needs to be brought beyond warm clothing and personal items.

The final stretch of road to the lake is unpaved and can be rough, so a private vehicle with good clearance, or a tour that includes transport, makes the journey far more comfortable.
