Sulaiman-Too is a rocky mountain rising abruptly from the centre of Osh, Kyrgyzstan's second city, and a site of continuous spiritual significance for thousands of years. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009, the mountain has been used for worship by successive cultures, from pre-Islamic nature worship through to its role today as a place of pilgrimage for Muslims across Central Asia.
Paths wind up the slopes past caves, shrines and ancient petroglyphs depicting animals and human figures, some dating back more than a thousand years. A small museum built into the hillside displays archaeological finds from the site, and the summit offers sweeping views over Osh and the Fergana Valley, making it both a historic pilgrimage site and one of the best viewpoints in the city.
The mountain suits families, couples, groups, history lovers and photographers, for a visit of 1.5 to 3 hours. The museum built into the hillside is worth visiting both for its exhibits and its distinctive cave-like architecture.
As an active pilgrimage site, modest dress and respectful behaviour are appreciated, particularly near the shrines and prayer spots along the paths.
Fly from Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi to Osh, usually with one connection through a Gulf or Central Asian hub. Check current routes and book early.
Take a taxi or ride-hailing car into the city centre, usually a short drive.
