About Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New7Wonders of the World, was one of the largest and most significant cities of the ancient Maya civilisation, flourishing primarily between the 7th and 13th centuries AD as a major political, religious and economic centre. The site's most iconic structure, El Castillo, a precisely engineered stepped pyramid dedicated to the feathered serpent god Kukulkan, demonstrates the Maya's sophisticated understanding of astronomy, with its 365 steps corresponding to the days of the solar year.

Twice a year, during the spring and autumn equinoxes, a remarkable shadow effect on El Castillo's staircase creates the illusion of a serpent slithering down the pyramid, drawing large crowds to witness this precisely calculated ancient phenomenon. Beyond the pyramid, the site includes the Great Ball Court, the largest in Mesoamerica, the Temple of the Warriors, and a sacred cenote once used for ritual offerings, together illustrating the scale and sophistication of this once-great Maya metropolis.
