About Copper Canyon

Copper Canyon, known locally as Barrancas del Cobre, is actually a network of several interconnected canyons in northern Mexico's Sierra Tarahumara, collectively larger in both area and depth than the Grand Canyon in the United States. The canyon system is named for the copper and green lichen covering some of its canyon walls, and is home to the Raramuri, or Tarahumara, indigenous people, renowned for their extraordinary long-distance running traditions across the challenging canyon terrain.

The best way to experience Copper Canyon is aboard El Chepe, one of the world's great scenic railway journeys, winding through 37 bridges and 86 tunnels as it traverses the dramatic landscape between the coastal town of Los Mochis and Chihuahua City. Along the route, the town of Divisadero offers spectacular viewpoints and a thrilling zip line and cable car park, while Creel serves as a popular base for hiking and exploring the canyon's waterfalls and hot springs.
