About Hassan II Mosque, Casablanca

The Hassan II Mosque, completed in 1993, is one of the largest mosques in the world and home to the tallest minaret of any religious structure globally, standing at 210 metres, its design intentionally placing part of the mosque over the Atlantic Ocean in reference to a Quranic verse describing God's throne upon the water. Built to commemorate King Hassan II's 60th birthday, the mosque took thousands of artisans several years to complete, showcasing exceptional traditional Moroccan craftsmanship on a monumental modern scale.

Unlike most mosques in Morocco, the Hassan II Mosque is open to non-Muslim visitors through guided tours, offering a rare opportunity to see its vast prayer hall, capable of holding tens of thousands of worshippers, along with its retractable roof, heated floors and intricate zellige tilework, carved plaster and cedar wood detailing throughout. The mosque's dramatic oceanfront setting, especially when waves crash against its foundations during rougher weather, makes it one of Casablanca's most striking landmarks.
