About Garden Route

The Garden Route, stretching roughly 300 kilometres along South Africa's southern Cape coast between Mossel Bay and Storms River, is one of the country's most celebrated road trip destinations, winding through indigenous forests, dramatic coastal cliffs, tranquil lagoons and a string of charming seaside towns. The route takes its name from the lush, verdant scenery found along much of its length, a striking contrast to the drier landscapes elsewhere in South Africa.

Highlights along the way include the Tsitsikamma section of Garden Route National Park, known for its ancient forests and dramatic Storms River Mouth suspension bridge, the resort town of Plettenberg Bay with its beautiful beaches, and Knysna, famous for its lagoon, oyster farming and nearby Featherbed Nature Reserve. The route also offers opportunities for activities including bungee jumping at Bloukrans Bridge, one of the highest commercial bungee jumps in the world, whale watching in season, and exploring the Cango Caves further inland.
