About Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Sigiriya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an ancient rock fortress and palace complex built in the late 5th century by King Kasyapa, rising dramatically 200 m above the surrounding central plains of Sri Lanka. The summit once held a royal palace, and the approach up the rock passes through elaborate water gardens, boulder gardens and terraced gardens that together form one of the best-preserved examples of ancient urban planning in Asia.

Partway up, visitors pass through the remains of the Lion Gate, originally flanked by giant carved lion paws, and the famous mirror wall and frescoes depicting celestial maidens, painted over 1,500 years ago and remarkably well preserved. From the summit, the views stretch across the surrounding jungle and plains for many kilometres, making the climb, though demanding, one of the most rewarding experiences in Sri Lanka.
