About Yala National Park

Yala National Park, on Sri Lanka's southeast coast, is renowned as one of the best places on Earth to see wild leopards, with one of the highest leopard densities of any protected area in the world. Alongside leopards, the park's varied habitats of forest, scrubland, lagoons and grassland support elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, buffalo and an extraordinary range of birdlife.

Safaris are conducted by open-topped 4x4 jeep with an experienced tracker, usually departing in the early morning or late afternoon when animals are most active. While leopard sightings are never guaranteed, Yala's reputation and the sheer density and diversity of wildlife make it one of the most rewarding safari destinations in South Asia.

Good to Know

The park suits couples, groups, wildlife lovers and photographers, for a stay of 1 to 2 days with multiple safari drives. Morning and late afternoon drives generally offer the best chances of sightings, when temperatures are cooler and animals more active.

Leopard sightings, while relatively more likely here than almost anywhere else, are still not guaranteed on any single safari, so multiple drives across a stay improve the overall chances.
