About Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is Africa's tallest mountain and the world's highest free-standing volcanic mountain, its snow-capped summit, Uhuru Peak, rising to 5,895 metres above the surrounding Tanzanian plains. Unlike many of the world's other highest peaks, Kilimanjaro can be climbed by reasonably fit trekkers without requiring technical mountaineering skills or specialised climbing equipment, making it one of the most accessible of the world's great summits.

Several established routes lead to the top, varying in scenery, difficulty and duration, from the popular Marangu Route with its hut accommodation to the more scenic and increasingly favoured Machame Route. The mountain's slopes pass through dramatically different ecological zones, from lush rainforest at lower elevations through moorland and alpine desert to the arctic summit zone, with altitude sickness a serious consideration that requires a gradual, well-paced ascent for the best chance of reaching the top safely.
