The Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the world's largest inactive, intact and unfilled volcanic caldera, formed roughly 2 to 3 million years ago when a large volcano erupted and collapsed inward on itself, leaving behind a vast, self-contained bowl roughly 20 kilometres wide. Often described as Africa's Garden of Eden, the crater's confined, fertile floor supports an extraordinarily dense concentration of wildlife, including all of the Big Five, within a relatively compact area.
An estimated 25,000 large animals live within the crater at any given time, including one of Africa's highest densities of lions and one of the last significant populations of the critically endangered black rhino. The crater's dramatic walls, rising roughly 600 metres above the floor, create a natural enclosure that, combined with permanent water sources, allows for exceptional game viewing throughout the year, making it one of the most reliable wildlife-watching destinations anywhere in Africa.
Ngorongoro Crater suits families, couples, groups and wildlife enthusiasts, for a stay of 1 to 2 days, often combined with a wider Serengeti and Tarangire itinerary. Most visitors stay at a lodge along the crater rim and descend into the crater floor for game drives during the day.
The crater's compact size and dense wildlife concentration make it possible to see an exceptional diversity of animals in a relatively short visit compared to larger parks like the Serengeti.
