The Ark Fortress in Bukhara is a massive fortified royal town-within-a-town, with origins believed to stretch back over 1,500 years, serving as the residence and seat of power for successive rulers of Bukhara until the early 20th century. Its towering mudbrick walls and imposing main gate, rebuilt and expanded many times over the centuries, dominate the western edge of Bukhara's historic centre.
Inside the fortress walls, a complex of courtyards, former royal buildings and a mosque have been partly restored and now house museums displaying artefacts from Bukhara's long history, including items related to the city's royal court and its role as a centre of Islamic scholarship. Significant parts of the Ark were damaged by Soviet bombardment in the early 20th century, but enough survives to give a strong sense of the citadel's former scale and importance.
The fortress suits families, couples, groups, history lovers and photographers, for a visit of 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Significant parts of the Ark were damaged during Soviet-era conflict in the early 20th century, so some areas are more ruined than restored.
The fortress sits close to Bukhara's other historic landmarks, making it easy to combine with a wider walking tour of the old city.
