About Itchan Kala, Khiva

Itchan Kala, the inner walled city of Khiva, was declared Uzbekistan's first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990, recognised for its exceptional state of preservation as a complete example of a Central Asian walled city. Enclosed entirely within thick clay walls, the compact old town holds dozens of mosques, madrasas, minarets and palaces, many dating from the 18th and 19th centuries when Khiva served as the capital of the Khorezm Khanate.

Unlike Samarkand or Bukhara, where historic sites are scattered among a modern, living city, Itchan Kala's entire enclosed area functions almost as a single open-air museum, allowing visitors to walk between its monuments without needing to navigate through surrounding modern development. Highlights include the unfinished, strikingly turquoise-tiled Kalta Minor Minaret and the ornately decorated Tash Hauli Palace.
