About Cologne Cathedral

Cologne Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a monumental Gothic cathedral whose construction began in 1248 and, remarkably, was not completed until 1880, making it one of the longest building projects in European history. Its twin spires, each 157 metres tall, made it briefly the tallest structure in the world upon completion and remain among the tallest cathedral towers anywhere today.

The cathedral survived the extensive Allied bombing of Cologne during the Second World War largely intact, standing as one of the few recognisable structures amid the city's otherwise flattened historic centre. Inside, the cathedral houses the Shrine of the Three Kings, said to contain the relics of the Biblical Magi, along with stunning stained-glass windows, some dating back centuries and others added in the modern era.
