The Reichstag Building, completed in 1894, has served as the seat of the German parliament through much of the country's turbulent modern history, surviving a devastating fire in 1933 and heavy damage during the Battle of Berlin in 1945. Left partially ruined and largely unused for decades during the Cold War, when it stood close to the Berlin Wall, the building was extensively restored following German reunification.
The building's most striking modern feature is its glass dome, added during a 1990s renovation led by architect Norman Foster, which allows natural light to flood the parliamentary chamber below and offers visitors a spiralling walkway up to a rooftop terrace with panoramic views over Berlin. The dome's design, symbolising transparency in government, has become one of the most recognisable additions to any historic building in modern Germany.
The Reichstag suits families, couples, groups and architecture lovers, for a visit of 1.5 to 2 hours. Dome access is free but requires advance online registration, as visitor numbers are limited for security reasons.
An audio guide is typically provided during the spiral walkway ascent, explaining both the building's history and views of surrounding Berlin landmarks.
Fly from Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi to Berlin, usually with one connection through a European or Gulf hub. Check current routes and book early.
Take the train or a taxi from Berlin Brandenburg Airport into central Berlin, about 30 to 45 minutes.
