About Neuschwanstein Castle

Neuschwanstein Castle, commissioned by the eccentric King Ludwig II of Bavaria in 1869 as a private retreat, stands dramatically on a rocky hill above the village of Hohenschwangau, inspired by medieval German castles and the romantic operas of composer Richard Wagner. Despite its medieval appearance, the castle is a 19th-century creation, built with then-modern engineering including central heating and running water.

Ludwig died before the castle's interior was fully completed, and he lived there for less than six months before his mysterious death in 1886. The castle has since become one of the most visited attractions in Germany, famously serving as inspiration for Sleeping Beauty's castle at Disneyland, and offers sweeping views over the surrounding Bavarian Alps and lakes from its towers and the nearby Marienbrucke bridge.
