About Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Kiyomizu-dera, founded in 778 AD with current buildings dating from the 1600s, is one of the most famous temples in Kyoto, standing on a wooded hillside above the old Higashiyama district. Its name means Pure Water Temple, after the waterfall that flows beneath the main hall, and it is part of the UNESCO-listed Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.

The temple's large wooden stage juts out over the hillside and looks across the city, held up by tall wooden pillars joined without nails in the traditional way. Below it, three streams of water fall into a pond at the Otowa Waterfall, where visitors can drink, each stream said to bring a different blessing. The nearby Jishu Shrine is known as a place to pray for love, and the walk up through old shopping streets is part of the experience.

Good to Know

The temple suits families, couples, groups and photographers for a visit of 1 to 2 hours. Evening illumination events happen during special openings in spring, summer and autumn, following their own schedule.

Use the cups provided at the Otowa Waterfall rather than drinking directly, and cherry blossom and autumn weekends are notably crowded, so an early morning or evening visit is more comfortable.
