Tokyo Skytree, opened in May 2012 at 634 m, is the tallest tower in Japan, rising over the east side of Tokyo beside the Sumida River. It is used for broadcasting and also has two observation decks — Tembo Deck at about 350 m and Tembo Galleria at about 450 m — where the view stretches across the city and on clear days to Mount Fuji.
Visitors take a fast lift to Tembo Deck, where they can walk around and look out over Tokyo, then a second lift goes up to the higher Tembo Galleria, which has a curved walkway and a glass floor in places. At its base is a large shopping and dining complex called Tokyo Solamachi, with an aquarium and a planetarium, together making a good half-day trip from central Tokyo.
The tower suits families, couples, groups and photographers, for a visit of 2 to 3 hours including the shops. Tembo Deck is the main deck, and Tembo Galleria is higher and costs extra.
Mount Fuji is visible on clear days, especially in winter, and the Solamachi complex below is large enough to fill extra time before or after visiting the decks.
Fly from Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi to Japan, usually with one connection through a Gulf, Southeast Asian or other Asian hub. Check current routes and book early.
Take the airport train or limousine bus into central Tokyo, or a taxi.
Take the train to Tokyo Skytree Station or Oshiage Station, directly beneath the tower.
Go up to the observation decks, then explore Solamachi and the area.
