About Osaka Castle

Osaka Castle, originally built in 1583 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, is one of the most famous castles in Japan and a symbol of the city. It stands on a high stone base surrounded by moats, with a white keep (five storeys outside, eight inside) and green roofs that glow against the sky.

The current main tower is a 1931 reconstruction, later renovated, but it holds a museum about the castle's history and an observation deck with city views, with floors showing exhibits, models and armour that tell the story of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the castle's battles. The surrounding park holds gardens, a plum grove and hundreds of cherry trees, making it a favourite place for walks, picnics and cherry blossom viewing.

Good to Know

The castle suits families, couples, groups, history lovers and photographers, for a visit of 2 to 3 hours including the park. A lift takes visitors up most of the way inside the keep, followed by stairs.

Crowds peak heavily during cherry blossom season, so an early morning visit or a weekday is more comfortable, and the castle is lit up beautifully at night even though the keep itself closes in the evening.
