About Mount Kinabalu

Mount Kinabalu, rising to 4,095 m in Sabah on the island of Borneo, is the highest peak in Malaysia and one of the most climbed mountains in Southeast Asia. It sits within Kinabalu Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for its extraordinary biodiversity, from lowland rainforest at the base to alpine meadows and bare granite near the summit.

Climbing to the top is usually done over two days, with an overnight stay at a rest house partway up before a pre-dawn final push to reach the summit for sunrise. Climbers need a permit and a registered guide, both arranged through the park authority, and the reward for the effort is one of the most spectacular sunrise views in Southeast Asia, with the summit's granite slopes glowing gold as the sun rises over Borneo.
