About Boudhanath Stupa

Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world, dominates the skyline of its namesake neighbourhood in eastern Kathmandu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major centre of Tibetan Buddhism outside Tibet itself. Its enormous white dome is topped by a gilded spire painted with the watchful eyes of Buddha, visible from a considerable distance.

A constant stream of pilgrims and monks circle the base of the stupa clockwise, spinning prayer wheels and reciting mantras, especially active at sunrise and sunset. The surrounding neighbourhood has grown into a lively hub of Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, shops and cafes, reflecting the large Tibetan refugee community that has called the area home for decades.
