The Everest Base Camp trek is one of the world's most celebrated hiking routes, leading through the Khumbu region of the Nepal Himalayas to the foot of Mount Everest, the highest mountain on Earth at 8,849 m. The trail passes through Sherpa villages, suspension bridges, rhododendron forests and high alpine terrain within Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Most trekkers fly from Kathmandu to the small mountain airstrip at Lukla before setting out on foot, spending nights in teahouses in villages such as Namche Bazaar, Tengboche and Dingboche, with built-in acclimatisation days to adjust to the altitude. Reaching Base Camp itself, with Everest's summit towering above, along with the nearby viewpoint of Kala Patthar for a closer panoramic view, is the reward for what is widely considered a true bucket-list trekking achievement.
The trek suits fit, experienced hikers and groups prepared for 12 to 14 days of walking at altitude, with hiring a licensed guide and porter strongly recommended. Acclimatisation days built into the itinerary are essential to reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
Teahouse accommodation along the route provides basic rooms and meals, becoming simpler and more expensive the higher you climb, so budgeting extra for food and charging services at higher villages is worthwhile.
