Wahiba Sands, also known as Sharqiya Sands, is a vast desert of rolling orange dunes covering a large area of eastern Oman, long home to Bedouin communities who still herd camels and goats across its sandy terrain. The dunes rise and fall dramatically across the landscape, offering some of the country's most striking desert scenery, especially at sunrise and sunset when the sand glows deep orange and gold.
Most visitors experience the desert through a guided 4x4 dune-bashing excursion, followed by an overnight stay in a traditional-style desert camp, where dinner, Bedouin music, camel rides and stargazing under some of the clearest night skies in the region round out the experience. With almost no light pollution, Wahiba Sands is also one of the best places in Oman for observing the stars.
The desert suits couples, groups and adventure travellers, for a stay of 1 to 2 days, usually including an overnight camp. A 4x4 vehicle with an experienced driver is essential, since ordinary cars cannot handle the soft sand.
Desert camps range from more basic Bedouin-style tents to comfortable glamping setups, so it's worth checking what's included and the level of facilities before booking.
Fly from Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi to Muscat, with direct flights available on several airlines. Check current routes and book early.
