The Museum of Islamic Art, opened in 2008, stands on its own man-made island at the southern end of Doha's corniche, its geometric limestone building designed by renowned architect I.M. Pei to evoke classic Islamic architectural forms. Inside, the museum holds one of the most significant collections of Islamic art in the world, spanning more than 1,400 years and three continents.
Galleries display ceramics, textiles, metalwork, glass, manuscripts and jewellery drawn from across the Islamic world, from Spain to China, carefully arranged to trace the development of Islamic art and craftsmanship through the centuries. The museum's waterfront setting, surrounded by landscaped parkland, also offers some of the best views of Doha's modern skyline across the bay.
The museum suits families, couples, groups and history lovers, for a visit of 2 to 3 hours. Entry is generally free for the permanent galleries, though temporary exhibitions may carry a separate charge.
The museum park surrounding the building is a popular spot for a walk at sunset, with views back across the bay toward Doha's West Bay skyline.
