Souq Waqif, meaning Standing Market, has served as a trading hub in Doha for over a century, though its current mud-brick-style buildings and narrow lanes are the result of a careful restoration completed in the 2000s. The souq's winding alleys are filled with shops selling spices, textiles, perfumes, traditional clothing and souvenirs, alongside a dedicated falcon souq where falconry equipment and birds are traded.
By evening, the souq transforms into one of Doha's most atmospheric places to eat, with restaurants spilling out onto the lanes serving Qatari, Lebanese, Indian and other cuisines. Street performers, horse and camel-drawn carriages, and the general buzz of both locals and visitors make Souq Waqif one of the best places to experience everyday Qatari life after dark.
The souq suits families, couples, groups and food lovers, for a visit of 2 to 4 hours. It is at its liveliest and most atmospheric in the evening, once the daytime heat has eased and the restaurants fill up.
The falcon souq is a particularly interesting stop even for visitors not buying anything, since falconry remains an important part of traditional Gulf culture.
