About Hunza Valley

Hunza Valley is one of the most beautiful and peaceful destinations in Gilgit-Baltistan, set at an altitude of around 2,500 metres and surrounded by some of the highest peaks in the Karakoram. Rakaposhi, Ultar Sar, Lady Finger and Diran rise above the valley, while terraced fields, orchards and the Hunza River run below. Known for its friendly people, high literacy and calm way of life, Hunza feels both welcoming and timeless, and it is a favourite stop for travelers from all over the world.

The heart of the valley is Karimabad, the main town, where two historic forts tell the story of the region. Baltit Fort, perched above the town, and the older Altit Fort, close to the river, give a glimpse of Hunza's royal past and traditional wooden architecture. A short drive or hike takes you to Eagle's Nest, a viewpoint famous for its sunrise and sunset panoramas over the whole valley. The narrow lanes of Karimabad are also full of small cafes, handicraft shops and stalls selling dry fruits, apricots and walnuts.

Beyond Karimabad, the Karakoram Highway leads to some of Pakistan's most photographed places. Attabad Lake, with its bright turquoise water, is popular for boating, while further north the Passu Cones, Passu Glacier and the Hussaini Suspension Bridge offer dramatic scenery and a little adventure. Gulmit, Ganish Village and Borith Lake add quiet corners for walking and photography. The road continues up to Khunjerab Pass, one of the highest paved border crossings in the world, and it is a rewarding journey for those who want to see the top of Pakistan.

The best time to visit Hunza is from April to October. Spring brings cherry and apricot blossoms, summer offers pleasant weather for sightseeing, and autumn turns the whole valley into shades of gold and red. Winters are cold and can bring snow and road closures, so it is best to plan ahead. Local dishes such as walnut cake, chapshuro and fresh apricot juice are worth trying, and warm layers are useful even in summer evenings. With its mix of culture, scenery and easy travel, Hunza Valley suits families, couples, friends and solo travelers alike.
