About the Passu Cones

The Passu Cones are a ridge of sharp, tooth-like peaks that rise steeply above the village of Passu in upper Hunza. Their pointed shapes and bands of rock and ice give them the look of a cathedral spire, which is why many people call them Passu Cathedral. Below them, the Passu Glacier slides down towards the Hunza River and the Karakoram Highway runs through green fields and orchards.

You do not need to trek to enjoy them. The Cones can be seen from the Karakoram Highway, from roadside viewpoints, and from the village itself. Many visitors also walk to the nearby Hussaini Suspension Bridge and the edge of Passu Glacier for closer views.

About the Cones

The Cones, also known as Passu Cathedral or Passu Cathedral Ridge, are part of the wider Karakoram range, and the highest of them, Tupopdan, is around 6,100 m. In the morning the peaks catch the first light with a warm glow, while late afternoon shadows sharpen their outlines. Passu village sits below them among fields and apricot trees, with small guesthouses and cafes that face the peaks.

Travel Tips for Passu Cones

A few useful things to know before you go there.

  1. Start early

Start early for the best light and the calmest views.

  2. Carry a jacket and sun protection

Wind and strong sun are both common at altitude. Days can be warm, but mornings, evenings and shade feel cold, so carry layers and a warm jacket.

  3. Wear sturdy shoes

Wear sturdy shoes for the glacier and village walks.

  4. Use caution on the suspension bridge

Keep to one person at a time if advised, hold the rails and do not cross if you are unsure.

  5. Stay off the ice

Stay on marked paths near the glacier and never walk onto the ice without a guide.

  6. Carry cash

ATMs are limited in upper Hunza, so withdraw in Gilgit or Karimabad.

  7. Bring water and snacks

Options between villages can be limited.

  8. Keep the area clean

Take rubbish with you and avoid plastic.

  9. Respect local customs

Hunza is a conservative region, so dress modestly and ask before photographing people.

  10. Check weather and road conditions

Especially after rain, because landslides can affect the Karakoram Highway.
