About Baltit Fort

Baltit Fort stands on a rocky spur above Karimabad, watching over the town and the river far below. For centuries it was the home of the Mirs of Hunza, and its stone and timber walls, narrow stairs and small windows reflect a long history of defence, trade and royal life along the old Silk Route.

The fort was carefully restored in the 1990s and now operates as a museum. Inside, you can walk through the old rooms, see traditional furniture, kitchens and royal quarters, and learn how the people of Hunza lived. From the rooftop, the view across Karimabad, the terraced fields and the white peaks of Rakaposhi and Ultar Sar is one of the best in the valley.

Local story

About the Fort

The fort grew over many centuries from a simple tower into a multi-storey palace. Its design uses local stone, mud and wood, and shows Tibetan influence in its upper levels, reportedly linked to a marriage between the Hunza royal family and a princess from Baltistan. [VERIFY history] The last Mir moved to a new palace in the 1940s, and the old fort was later abandoned, then saved and restored. Today its rooms, balconies and watch areas can be explored with a guide. [VERIFY current visitor routes and guide availability]
