About Karimabad

Karimabad is the main town of Hunza and the place most visitors choose to stay. It sits on a terraced slope above the Hunza River, with apricot, cherry and walnut orchards around it and the great white peaks of Rakaposhi, Ultar Sar and Diran standing over the valley. On a clear morning the view from almost any rooftop is spectacular.

The town was once the capital of the Hunza princely state and is dominated by the old Baltit Fort, which looks down over the bazaar and homes below. The people of Hunza are known for their warmth, high literacy and strong sense of community, and visitors often say the welcome is as memorable as the scenery.

Karimabad is easy to reach, easy to walk around and a perfect base for day trips to Attabad Lake, Passu, Gulmit and Khunjerab Pass. Even a short stay gives a real sense of the valley's history and way of life.

Higher up, guesthouses and hotels line the slopes to catch the views. Early morning brings soft light on the peaks, while spring blossom and autumn leaves change the whole valley's colour.
