Altyn-Emel National Park, established in 1996, protects a huge stretch of steppe and semi-desert landscape east of Almaty, between the Ili River and a series of colourful mountain ranges. Its best-known feature is the Singing Dune, a giant sand dune roughly 150 m high that produces a low, resonant hum when wind or footsteps set the sand moving under the right conditions.
Beyond the dune, the park holds the striped, multicoloured slopes of the Aktau (White Mountains) and the dark volcanic ridges of the Katutau range, along with wide plains that are home to wild Przewalski's horses, kulans and other steppe wildlife. The park's size and remoteness make it one of the most dramatic and least crowded landscapes within reach of Almaty.
The park suits couples, groups, adventure lovers and photographers, for a visit of 1 to 2 days given the distance and the ground to cover inside the park. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended for reaching the Singing Dune and the Aktau Mountains.
The dune only 'sings' under the right conditions of dryness and wind, so a hum is not guaranteed on every visit, but the climb and the views over the surrounding plains are worthwhile regardless.
Fly from Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi to Almaty, usually with one connection through a Gulf or Central Asian hub. Check current routes and book early.
Drive about 300 km, roughly 4 to 5 hours, to the park entrance. A private car or tour is recommended.
Continue by 4x4 to the Singing Dune and begin the climb up its slope.
Continue on to the Aktau and Katutau mountains, or stay overnight to see more of the park.
April to May
Green steppe and mild temperatures, one of the most comfortable times to visit.
September to October
Cooler air and clear skies, ideal for the long drives and the dune climb.
June to August
Very hot, with little shade across the open steppe. Visit early in the day.
November to March
Cold, and some park roads may be difficult after snow.
Travel smart
A few useful things to know before you go there.
Park roads, especially to the Singing Dune, are rough and better suited to 4x4 vehicles.
The steppe offers little shade and few places to buy supplies.
Climbing the Singing Dune is tiring in loose sand.
The park is large, so plan an overnight stay if you want to see more than the dune.
There is almost no shade across most of the park.
Keep a respectful distance from any wild horses or kulans you spot.
There are few, if any, card payment options inside the park.
Some zones of the park may require advance permission to enter.
