The Kolsai Lakes, often called the Pearl of the Northern Tien Shan, are three clear alpine lakes set one above the other in a forested valley near the Kazakhstan-Kyrgyzstan border. The Lower Lake is the most accessible and the most visited, its still green-blue water ringed by spruce forest and reachable by a short walk from the park entrance.
The Middle and Upper Kolsai Lakes lie higher up the valley and are reached by longer hikes or on horseback, through forest and open meadow with wide mountain views. The valley is also the usual starting point for the trek or horse ride to nearby Kaindy Lake, making the Kolsai Lakes National Park a natural base for several days of trekking in this part of the Tien Shan.
The park suits couples, groups, hikers and nature lovers, for a visit ranging from a single day at the Lower Lake to 2 or 3 days trekking higher into the valley. Horses can be hired at the entrance for those who prefer not to walk the full distance to the upper lakes.
Guesthouses and yurt camps near the park entrance offer overnight stays for those continuing further into the valley, and it's worth bringing cash since card payments are rarely available this far from the city.
Fly from Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi to Almaty, usually with one connection through a Gulf or Central Asian hub. Check current routes and book early.
Drive about 300 km, roughly 4 to 5 hours, to the park entrance near Saty village. A private car or tour is the easiest option.
Walk a short, easy trail from the entrance to reach the Lower Kolsai Lake.
Continue on foot or by horse to the Middle and Upper Lakes, or stay overnight to explore further.
June to August
Warm days, green forest and the easiest trekking conditions. The best season.
September
Cooler air, golden larches and fewer visitors.
May
Snow is melting at higher altitudes, so upper trails may still be difficult.
October to April
Cold, snowy and largely inaccessible beyond the Lower Lake.
