About Charyn Canyon

Charyn Canyon cuts through the steppe east of Almaty, its layered red and orange rock formed over roughly 12 million years by the Charyn River. The most famous stretch, known as the Valley of Castles, is lined with towering sandstone columns that genuinely look like the ruins of a fortress city, giving the canyon its nickname as a smaller cousin of the Grand Canyon.

The national park protects not just the canyon but a stretch of relict ash forest along the riverbanks, found almost nowhere else on Earth. A walking trail leads down into the Valley of Castles and along the canyon floor to the river, where the walls rise sharply on both sides. Morning and late afternoon light bring out the deepest reds and oranges in the stone, making it one of the best photography stops near Almaty.

Local story

Good to Know

The canyon suits families, couples, groups, hikers and photographers, for a half-day or full-day trip from Almaty. There is little shade on the rim, but the canyon floor and riverbank offer some shelter from the sun.

The Valley of Castles trail descends steeply before levelling out, so sturdy shoes make the walk back up far more comfortable, and a vehicle or driver who will wait is worth arranging since the canyon is remote.
