About Makli Necropolis

Makli Necropolis stretches across a low hill on the outskirts of Thatta, a field of tombs, mausoleums and graves reaching to the horizon. Its royal tombs and monuments show carved stone, brick and glazed tile, and they trace the changing styles of Sindh across several centuries.

Thatta was a capital and a major centre of learning and trade under the Samma, Arghun and Tarkhan dynasties, and later a prominent city under Mughal rule. Rulers, nobles, scholars and Sufi saints were buried on Makli Hill, which is why the site holds both grand royal tombs and countless simple graves. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. Weathering, salty soil and age have damaged many monuments, and conservation work continues.

About the Necropolis

Spread across a wide hilltop overlooking the plains toward Thatta, this massive graveyard features royal tombs, open platforms, and scattered Sufi shrines. Key highlights include the finely carved sandstone Tomb of Jam Nizamuddin II, the elegant brick-domed Tomb of Isa Khan Tarkhan I, the two-storey stone mausoleum of Isa Khan Tarkhan II, and the Mughal-era Tomb of Diwan Shurfa Khan. Throughout the site, intricate floral and geometric sandstone carvings, blue and turquoise glazed tilework, and scenic hill views define the landscape, with early morning and late afternoon light best highlighting the delicate stone details.
