About Keenjhar Lake

Keenjhar Lake spreads across the plains near Thatta, a wide stretch of freshwater with low banks, reeds and open sky. It is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Pakistan and a favourite weekend escape for families from Karachi and Hyderabad, as well as a quiet wetland where birds gather in winter.

The lake is closely tied to the folk tale of Noori and Jam Tamachi, a fisherwoman and a king whose love story is one of the best-known legends in Sindhi culture. A mausoleum associated with Noori sits on a causeway in the lake and is reached by road. The lake is also an important source of drinking water for Karachi and Thatta, and it has been recognised as a wetland of international importance.
