About Frere Hall

Frere Hall stands in Saddar, set back behind wide lawns and shaded walkways. Its pointed arches, stone tracery, tall clock tower and warm yellow Gizri stone make it one of the finest colonial-era buildings in Karachi and a favourite with photographers.

It was built in the 1860s and named after Sir Henry Bartle Frere, who served as Commissioner of Sindh. It first served as a town hall for civic meetings and public events. After independence it became a library and cultural space. Inside, the murals by the renowned artist Sadequain, painted in the 1980s, are among its best-known treasures.

Whether you come for the architecture, the gardens, the art or a quiet walk in the heart of the city, Frere Hall is an easy and rewarding stop on any Karachi trip.
