Ziarat sits high in the mountains east of Quetta, a small hill town surrounded by dense juniper trees, orchards and quiet valleys. Its air is cool and clean in summer, and in winter the hills turn white with snow. It is one of the most peaceful places in Balochistan and a favourite escape for families from Quetta.
The town is best known for its juniper forest, one of the largest of its kind in the world, with some trees said to be many centuries old. Ziarat is also where Muhammad Ali Jinnah spent his last weeks in 1948, in a wooden residence that has become a national landmark. The residence was badly damaged in 2013 and was rebuilt and reopened afterwards.
Set across a high valley surrounded by ancient juniper forests, the town features the historic Quaid-e-Azam Residency, a colonial-era wooden building where Jinnah spent his final days. Key highlights include panoramic valley views from Prospect Point, scenic picnic spots at Sandeman Tangi gorge, the local Baba Kharwari shrine, and surrounding fruit orchards blooming in spring. Mornings and late afternoons offer the best walking weather, while winter snowfall transforms the area from December to February.
Quetta International Airport has flights from Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad, and this is the easiest way to arrive.
From Quetta, take the road towards Ziarat, about 2.5 to 3 hours depending on conditions. A private car or tour vehicle with a local driver is best.
The town is small and most sights are close together. Use your own vehicle or a local driver for forest and valley spots.
