About Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China is not one wall but a long chain of walls, towers and fortresses built across northern China over many centuries, with most visited sections dating to the Ming dynasty. Seen from a ridge, it looks like a stone dragon following the mountains into the distance. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

The sections near Beijing are the easiest to visit. Badaling is the busiest and has the best facilities, Mutianyu is greener and calmer, and Jinshanling is loved by hikers and photographers. The wall is made of brick, stone and packed earth, with watchtowers at regular intervals — restored sections have clear paths, handrails and cable cars, while wilder sections are crumbling and quiet. Walking even a short stretch gives a real sense of the scale of the wall and the work that went into it.
