About Li River, Guilin

The Li River winds through southern China past hundreds of tall, rounded limestone karst hills, over the famous stretch of about 80 km between Guilin and Yangshuo. Mist drifts between the peaks, farmers work the banks and water buffalo cool off in the shallows — a scene Chinese artists have painted for centuries.

The best-known journey is the cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo, taking about 4 to 5 hours and passing villages, bamboo groves and famous viewpoints, including the view near Xingping that appeared on the old 20-yuan note. The town of Yangshuo is a relaxed base with cafes, markets and outdoor activities, making a river trip here one of the most peaceful and photogenic experiences in China.
